RECORDS OF TINTERN'S PAST ARE HELD IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES :

MONMOUTHSHIRE COUNTY RECORD OFFICE
The Office is at Cwmbran, follow the signposts showing County Hall on the A4042 Newport to Abergavenny road, avoiding Cwmbran town centre. tel : 01633-644886

The Office keeps :

maps
parish registers (from 1695 onwards for Chapel Hill)
census registers
poor rates and parish relief records
some Tintern ironworks records
etc

the Office is open Tuesdays to Fridays 9.00am to 5.00pm (4.00pm on Friday). Enquirers can visit during opening hours but for major research, the Office prefers an appointment.


CHEPSTOW LIBRARY
The library is adjacent to the main car park off Welsh Street, tel : 01291-635730

The Library keeps :

A History of Monmouthshire Vol2 Part2 "The Hundred of Trelech" by Bradney
Excavations at the Abbey Furnaces by John Pickin
Excavations of Abbey Tintern Ironworks
Tintern Abbey by Charles Heath (kept in the locked cabinet)

CHEPSTOW MUSEUM
The museum is opposite Chepstow Castle car park, tel : 01291-625981

The Museum keeps :

a collection of historical records made by Judith Russill and donated to the museum in 1999. An appointment with the Custodian is necessary to view this material.
